The B2B solutions of FAIRWEG

Sustainability data, consulting and training for the travel industry and for companies with sustainability targets

Since 2019, FAIRWEG has been working on one question: how can the environmental and social commitment of hotels be shown in a verifiable way? This work has produced the FAIRWEG Score, a comparison index; the STAY FAIR initiative, which makes valid sustainability certifications visible in travel distribution; and a database of certification and sustainability data on hotels worldwide. On this basis we support tour operators, distribution systems, travel agencies, hotels and destinations, as well as companies that want to anchor sustainability targets in their travel policies.

Since 27 September 2026, new rules on environmental claims and sustainability labels apply in Germany, implementing EU Directive 2024/825 (the Empowering Consumers Directive). Our data, display specifications and training are designed so that partners can show sustainability information to travellers the way these rules require: substantiated, sourced and without generic labels.

DATA SERVICE

Data on the environmental and social commitment of hotels worldwide

The FAIRWEG database brings together data on the environmental and social commitment of hotels and other accommodation worldwide: recognised sustainability certifications with name, issuing body and expiry date, and 18 sustainability attributes, from organic food to water-saving measures, based on publicly available information from the hotel or on the requirements of a certificate. On this basis we calculate the FAIRWEG Score: a comparison index that rates a hotel’s publicly documented commitment against 12 environmental and social criteria, on a scale from 75 to 100. The Score is neither a certificate nor a label; how it is calculated and which sources feed into it is explained on our methodology page.

We research the data in a multi-stage process. Certificate validity periods are taken from the notifications of the certification schemes; Score ratings are reviewed when relevant new information arrives, such as the renewal or expiry of a certificate or a new sustainability report, and at the latest every two years. Through our B2B data service we provide the data under a licence model via API: certificate name and expiry date, the 12 criteria values with the scale, and the 18 sustainability attributes with a source note. These are exactly the details that German law has required for environmental claims towards travellers since September 2026: substantiated, specific and traceable on the same medium. If you want to bring sustainability information into your distribution in a verifiable way and avoid greenwashing, let’s talk.

The STAY FAIR Initiative

Making valid sustainability certifications visible in travel distribution

The STAY FAIR initiative was planned by FAIRWEG GmbH and developed in cooperation with ECOTRANS, the European network for sustainable tourism. It is supported by sponsors from the travel industry. These include the tour operators alltours, Ameropa, DERTOUR Group, Hotelplan, Olimar, schauinsland reisen and vtours, the cooperations AER, Lufthansa City Center and QTA, as well as Amadeus.

STAY FAIR makes sustainability certifications visible where trips are selected and booked. Only certification schemes that meet all of the following requirements are included: they are awarded by an independent body, they verify compliance at or with the property, their criteria are published, they are valid for a limited period and they provide for withdrawal in case of non-compliance. Hotels holding a currently valid certification from a listed scheme are marked in distribution systems such as Amadeus Bistro. We deliver the certificate name and expiry date alongside, so that distribution partners can show them to travellers; when a certificate expires, the marking is removed automatically. STAY FAIR is not a label of its own and not a rating by FAIRWEG. Learn more and become a sponsor of STAY FAIR.

CONSULTING

Anchoring sustainability in travel policies and travel procurement

Many companies have sustainability targets but no travel policy yet that turns those targets into concrete rules for choosing transport and accommodation. What is often missing is information: which certifications are robust, which of a hotel’s claims are substantiated, and how such criteria can be built into booking processes.

This is where our consulting services come in. We support companies of all sizes, inside and outside the travel industry, in translating sustainability targets into travel policies and purchasing decisions: with hotel selection criteria based on recognised certifications and the FAIRWEG Score, with data access for travel management systems, and with wording that remains verifiable in internal and external communication. We bring in our experience from many years of working with data on certified and/or engaged businesses and the information in the FAIRWEG database.

SALES & COOPERATIONS

Our platform for hotels and destinations with documented sustainability commitment

With fairweg.de we have created a platform for the distribution and marketing of hotels and trips whose environmental and social commitment is documented and comparable through the FAIRWEG Score. Only accommodation that meets our basic requirements and has been rated with the FAIRWEG Score is listed on fairweg.de. Hotels and destinations that substantiate their commitment, or want to develop their measures together with us, present their offer here to an audience that cares about these aspects. Transparency is the foundation: we show what a hotel documents, and we rate no more than that.

Learn more about our Hotel Partner Programme. We would be happy to discuss the details with you. The same applies to your individual marketing campaign, through which we give your offer and your documented commitment the right stage.

TRAINING

Workshops and training on sustainability in travel distribution

Our workshops and training courses go into detail. We explain how things connect, clarify terms such as certification, comparison index and environmental claim, and share what we have learned from many years of data work on hotels.

A focus since 2026: the new German rules on environmental claims and sustainability labels that implement EU Directive 2024/825 (the Empowering Consumers Directive). Using examples from booking engines, catalogues, newsletters and advisory conversations, we show sales, marketing and product teams which wordings can be substantiated, how certificates and comparison values are presented to travellers, and which details belong with them. The training conveys practical knowledge for implementation; it does not replace legal advice.
